Erol Sabadosh

Erol Sabadosh

Usually when I find a new song or artist, I think to myself, I’m really glad I found this. Well in this case, I’m really glad Erol Sabadosh found me/forthebeat and sent me this remix.

Erol Sabadosh is a DJ from London. He’s played with La Roux, Bloc Party, The xx, MGMT and more and next up is London’s Lovebox Festival with the incredible 2 Many DJs and Fred Falke, Flying Lotus, Metronomy, Washed Out, Hudson Mohawke and more.

His remix of one of my favorite tracks off of the Strokes latest album Angles titled, “Call Me Back,” is one of the best remixes I’ve heard of any of their  tracks, past and present.

The Strokes – Call Me Back (Erol Sabadosh Remix)

forthebeat favorite artist: PICTUREPLANE

pictureplane

“Have you guys heard of the movie Twilight? Well this next song is just like that. Only in outer space. Yea, vampiric teenagers in love in outer space.” – Pictureplane, Mercury Lounge, March 8.

Pictureplane, Millionyoung, Small Black and Washed Out played Mercury Lounge last night, and it was a consistently awesome show from one act to the next.

forthebeat has already written about three of these four bands so this post is devoted mostly to the fabulously talented  Pictureplane. Though, it should be noted that all the bands killed it live last night…

Back to the man: Having first fell in love with Pictureplane’s “Goth Star,” I was extremely excited to see him live. He was more fun than I could have hoped for and hearing some of his new stuff including an unreleased track titled “Transgender,” I can’t wait for his new EP.  He will be touring with Small Black and Washed Out for the next month or so.

Listening to him interact with the crowd and also catching him post show, Travis (Pictureplane) is awesome in so many senses of the word. For instance: along with his traditional merchandise including t-shirts, vinyls and CDs, he has a small book for sale for $5 called “Chandeliers and Piss.” The book is well, just that, black and white photographs of different chandeliers and pictures of piss (piss on walls, piss on streets, etc.) The photos are mostly from places Travis visited in Europe from his fall tour with HEALTH.

There are apparently only 40 of these books in existence, 20 of which are currently with Pictureplane on tour (make that 19 because forthebeat bought one last night…)

You can catch all four bands at sxsw. Pictureplane is also playing Todd P’s Mexico festival and almost convinced forthebeat to change our flights/quit our day jobs and ride the 5 hours down to the festival…we still might.

One of the best live songs I have ever rocked out to:

Pictureplane – Goth Star

Washed Out | Small Black

Washed Out

Lovepump United is putting out a collaborative 7” split featuring Washed Out and Small Black, with each band remixing a single off the other’s debut EP.

Washed Out is one-man act Ernest Greene, who played his first New York City gig back in October.  At that time, BrooklynVegan wrote: “He’ll play just one NYC show (his second live show ever) one day before CMJ…I tried to get him to open the BrooklynVegan CMJ show…(one day later), but he said he can’t even stay in town that long due to personal commitments back home” – he was getting married.  So that was a good excuse.  Washed Out is balmy and atmospheric, lo-fi synthpop at its best.  Debut EP Life of Leisure was released digitally in August, followed up by a cassette-only EP High Times in September.

Small Black

Small Black is Long Island duo Josh Kolenik and Ryan Heyner, although they add Pitchfork.TV contributors Juan Pieczanski and Jeff Curtin to their live act – a nice connection for them.  At first, I wanted to say the Small Black buzz is due to the Pitchfork relationship – but after seeing them live at the VICE / VBS.TV Holiday Party, opening for Cold Cave at the Music Hall of Williamsburg, we decided to give their self-titled debut EP a good, hard listen.  Like Washed Out, it’s more of an acquired taste, but they definitely stand out.  The more I listen, the more I want to listen.

The vinyl split is out on January 26th, but you can pre-order it at Insound here.  Below are the original tracks…

Washed Out – You’ll See It
