New Music – Coma Cinema

Dear Coma Cinema, thank you for releasing new music this month, we love you. If you haven’t heard Coma Cinema yet, go back, back far in time, to last year and the year before to listen to earlier tracks i.e. “Flower Pills,” “In Lieu Of” “Her Vore,” “She’s A Dentist,” “Black Birthday Cake” and all of the other ones he has ever wrote.

Baby Prayers, Stoned Alone and Blue Suicide are previous album releases and are filled with some of my favorite tracks of 2009 and 2010. And now, there’s Abandoned Lands. And its pretty perfect.

It’s no secret, Coma Cinema is one of my favorites. Lead by envisionist / adventurist /psychoawesomist Mat Cothran. Coma Cinema’s Flower Pills stunned me in 2009 and then came the equally wowing Stoned Alone in 2010. Next up is Blue Suicide in early 2011. The below track is the single from the upcoming album.

New Artist: Teen Daze

Dance duo, Teen Daze from Vancouver are about to break-the-f-out, while they’ve gotten some solid attention it’s only a matter of time before that accelerates as they gear up for their new EP release “Four More Years.” The EP will be released on Arcade Sound, the label/management company, based out of Knoxville, TN, known to specialize in digital/limited edition vinyl and cassette releases (awesome). Some of Arcade Sound’s artists are forthebeat favorites including Boston based Magic Man and South Carolina’s Coma Cinema, who both played our summer and spring show, respectively.

Arcade Sound is a true pioneer in the chillwave force, and Teen Daze is no exception to their exemplary roster, however not as chillwave as fellow AS artist MillionYoung, but definitely on the same track, with an underlying dance tone. While there are some solid originals from the duo, the clear standout for me are their remixes. They’ve remixed a ton of tracks to near dance perfection including Local Natives, Japandroids, Yeasayer, and one of the latest ftb discoveries: Gobble Gobble and their standout single “Lawn Knives.” Some CA performances coming up, lucky west coasters.

New Artist: Backseat Dreamer

When Mat Cothran of Coma Cinema wrote to me about this artist, I for sure listened up because I f*** shirts love Coma Cinema, and if he’s a fan, I’m likely to be one too. (If you haven’t listened to Coma Cinema’s Baby Prayers or the new EP Stoned Alone yet, you’re missing out – listen and buy them now.)

BackSeat Dreamer is South Carolina native Sean Neuse. His music is dreamy, electronic and makes me want to dance and inhale and exhale slowlllyyy. I love that he describes his music as “a dreamer in a world that isn’t real” because yes, this isn’t real (not Backseat Dreamer, I mean everything, all of it…).

The album release party is June 19th in Greenville, SC, and the  EP Love Not Found is officially available on July 13th on Stickfigure Records, out of Atlanta – so look out for it then…

New Album Review: Coma Cinema

Coma Cinema is one of my favorite artist discoveries of 2010, actually, Coma Cinema is one of my favorite artist discoveries ever. Mat Cothran’s musical magical talent is amazing. I love his songs, all of them, yes all of them. I could listen over and over for hours, and I do. His first album Baby Prayers was beautiful, if you haven’t already, listen to the entire thing and download for free, and start here with Flower Pills. Immediately after falling in love with it, we were fortunate enough to have Coma Cinema come up from South Carolina to play their first NYC show at our spring showcase (with Hooray for Earth & Sunglasses).

Coma Cinema will release their second album, Stoned Alone, on June 1st  (album artwork pictured above). You can catch some of the tracks on their MySpace page now and I’ve listed some below. I can’t pick a favorite track or even a few favorite tracks, I pretty much love them all. The album collectively feels like a dream-like state of clouds floating past your cheeks, tiny hairs stand up with excitement, on the edge of looking out into darkness that responds with lightness floating in a dream the bubble that bursts and fast forwards and then rewinds until you’re standing still but upside down. Yea, that about sums it up.

Highlights of the shimmering excellence:

Blissed – beautiful dreamy float into space close your eyes/open your eyes/close them again delicious nightmare you dont want to wake from and seems to go on and on forever but when you wake you realize it was just under a minute or in this case under two, clocking in at 1:56

Stoned Alone – listen for yourself but a perfect ending to every beginning

Black Birthday Cake – reminds me why i love to cry when i find things emotionally beautiful you know like a waterfall or hot sun on your naked skin before you dive into cold water that kind of stuff that shakes you unequivocally

Her Vore - female vocals on this track along with Mat’s is a perfect pair. This one makes me feel like I’m starring out into a darkened abyss with nothing but everything left unseen all at once.

The album is being released on cassette tape (awesome) and digitally June 1 via Arcade Sounds Ltd, same label as Magic Man, who will be playing forthebeat’s next show on June 11th at Pianos.

Oh No Ono Surprise at forthebeat’s Spring Show

OH NO ONO are hard to categorize or even explain. I’ll be listening to them and think they remind me a lot of Empire of the Sun, but then I’ll play a different track and something completely different comes to mind. Seeing them live at Union Hall in January, I thought all four of them reminded me of David Bowie in Labyrinth / a 70′s dance party cast to the rising sun…

When you listen to Oh No Ono for the first time, you try to imagine how they might interact on stage and how they might sound live, but seeing them in-person affirmed all of my positive thoughts on this strangely wonderful act. Hailing from Denmark, they are eccentric both musically and aesthetically.

It was a true honor having Malthe Fischer join Hooray for Earth on stage last week at the spring forthebeat show. The night opened with Coma Cinema (visiting from South Carolina), Sunglasses (visiting from Atlanta and just signed to Lefse Records (Neon Indian, Keepaway, etc.), then Hooray For Earth joined by Fischer and members of Zambri, followed by The Royal Chains. The night was amazing. All of the bands rocked and forthebeat wishes we could re-play the evening over and over again. Special thanks to our DJs as well.

New Artist: Coma Cinema

I really love this one…

Mat Cothran is Coma Cinema. A 21 year old bright young thing from South Carolina and definitely one to look out for.

I have a short attention span, and you would think Mat Cothran’s album would complement this well, as his 14 song compilation Baby Prayers (songs he has been working on – on and off – since 2005) are mostly under 2 minutes each. But they leave me wanting more, particularly “Flower Pills” – the introduction to his website, which once inside, allows you to download the entire CD for free; this was one of the tracks I wished to be longer. “Daffodils” is another favorite and must-listen, although a bit longer clocking in at a whole 2 minutes 50 seconds (!) I love dreamy dance tracks, and I think Mat Cothran achieves this well in both sound and lyrics with “Flower Pills” and “Daffodils,” but the complete album really provides a collective and unique listening experience.
