Interview: Wise Blood

Listen and don’t dance, go on, try it.

Ok, so Pitchfork got him first but ours is more interesting. Read about Wise Blood below and find out why his aura/vibe is white.

The forthebeat/Transparent/ABC News Amplified showcase for CMJ was last week at Public Assembly and we couldn’t have asked for a better pump-up-the crowd than opener, Wise Blood.

Chris Laufman’s debut EP has brought him some well deserved attention we’re certain will only increase, especially with his next album, which he’s working on now. Read one of our favorite ftb interviews below and buy his 5 track EP on his Bandcamp Page (one of the most fun 5 consecutive tracks we’ve heard all year)

1. Hows Pittsburgh? Do you find it inspirational for your music development?

Pittsburgh is a dark, wonderful place sort of like what Washington state looks like in the Twilight series, but creepier.

2. How was CMJ (thank you for playing our show!) Were there any bands either you performed with or saw that interested you?

CMJ was great, had a fun time, especially at your showcase. Wish I had been able to watch myself perform live, heard it was awesome.

3. I know your band’s name is based after the novel by Flannery O’Connor, do you think you will draw any future references to this novel – like song titles or lyrics? Possibly, but you’ll really have to be looking for it.

4. What’s STRT SGNS about?

Wanting to be saved by someone, wanting someone to take care of you and invest a lot in you personally.

5. What song off your EP do you like performing live best?

I think i actually like performing HERE COMES THE SUN the best

6. Who would you love to tour with/play with? We think juiceboxxx and pictureplane would be awesome…

Those are good picks but maybe Salem.

7. What color best describes Wise Blood’s aura?

Wise Blood – B.I.G. E.G.O.

Le Miel du Mois: Juillet

Et Musique Pour Tous publishes my monthly mixtape at the 1st of each month. The mixtape is available to stream as individual tracks or you can download the entire 1 hour mix to your ipod as one track.

A fan of the tapes described one of the summer mixes of ’09 like this: “it’s like dancing around the edge of a pool late night with a drink and a cigarette and oversized t-shirts and sometimes getting pushed in and you never remember the photos that get taken but you laugh the whole time,” I hope you’ll agree the 2010 Le Miel du Mois summer tapes envokes the same. The picture above is from Polock, Valencia based band that just released their EP. Definitely one to check out if you haven’t already; another is Baby Jazz (Elgin Braden of Aux Arc and Sam Cooper of Sunglasses) with the opening track “The Song for the Season” with lyrics including “Yes, its Christmas time” I knew this was a perfect opener for the July mix… Happy Independence Month.

Two Door Cinema Club – What You Know (LightsoverLA Remix)

Charlotte Gainsbourg – Time of the Assasins (XXXChange Remix)

forthebeat’s Northside Festival Picks

Glass Ghost – Mechanical Life

Oh Land – Heavy Eyes (Kasper Bjørke Remix)

Can’t Stay Awake…

…until you listen to Cloud Nothings, who will do nothing but get you completely amped up and ready to rock with their buzzy, super lo-fi pop.

Old Flame Records is putting out the band’s latest release, Didn’t You – a 7” featuring the B-side “Even If It Worked Out.”  The limited blue vinyl will be out on June 24th (also digitally), the same day the Cleveland band plays the Knitting Factory with Wavves and DOM as part of the Northside Festival.  This is the fourth stop on a 6-date tour with Wavves (check the schedule below and buy tix to the Knitting Factory show in Brooklyn HERE).

Here’s a little bit about Cloud Nothings from their bio: In the fall of 2009, Dylan Baldi was an 18-year-old college student studying saxophone and sound recording at a small college near Cleveland, OH.  He had played in bands around town since he was old enough to hold a guitar, but recently he’d been putting his solo music on record through the magic of home recordings.  He titled the solo project “Cloud Nothings,” made a myspace page, friended some bands he liked, and sat back to wait.  That’s when a certain NYC show promoter known for putting on shows in unorthodox venues emailed asking if Cloud Nothings wanted to play with buzz bands Real Estate and Woods at the Market Hotel.  This happened to be the same date that Dylan had to play a mandatory performance with his college band or end up failing the class, which put him in the awkward position of having to decide if it was worthwhile to drop out of college to play a very first show with a non-existent band that had only been written about on a couple blogs and heard by a few people.  We are most grateful for his decision.

That’s right!

And for your listening pleasure – although not featured on the upcoming release, but still one of my faves…
